What is the importance of Laylatul Qadr in Islam? 

Laylatul Qadr, or the Night of Power, is one of the most important nights of Ramadan. Muslims observe it during the last ten nights of Ramadan. It holds immense significance for Muslims because it is considered to be the Night of Decree. Worshipping Allah (SWT) and giving charity on Laylatul Qadr can bring abundant spiritual blessings. Why is Laylatul Qadr important? 

Laylatul Qadr translates to the ‘Night of Power’ or ‘decree’. While the entire month of Ramadan is filled with blessings and virtues, Laylatul Qadr represents its pinnacle. How is Laylatul Qadr the Night of Decree? 

One of the well-established facts about Laylatul Qadr is that it is the night of decree. The Quran clearly mentions that:

“Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night is made distinct every precise matter -[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]” (Surat Ad-Dukhān, 44:3-5)

The Story of Laylatul Qadr

The angel Jibreel (Gabriel) came to the Prophet (ﷺ) while he was in a cave on Mount Hira and revealed the first few verses of Surah Al-Alaq. This was the beginning of the revelation of the Quran, which continued for the next 23 years.

The Night When the Quran Was Revealed

The Quran describes Laylat al Qadr as the night on which the revelation of the Quran began: “Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. When is Laylat al Qadr?

The exact occurrence of Laylatul Qadr is not revealed. What we know through Hadiths is that this great night falls during the last ten days (Ashara) of Ramadan: “Narrated `Aisha: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2017) Some Hadith indicate certain Signs of Laylatul Qadr, but no sign confirms the night with complete certainty. Therefore, it is wise to treat all nights of the last Ashara as important opportunities to seek blessings.

Traditional Observance of Laylatul Qadr

Many Muslims traditionally observe Laylatul Qadr on the 27th night of Ramadan. This practice allows believers to maximize their efforts to seek Allah’s (SWT) blessings before Ramadan ends. As mentioned before, the entire last Ashara is significant.

Giving charity is considered a practical act of worship in Islam. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e., belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2014)

What should we do on the night of Laylatul Qadr?

As Muslims, we should make the most of this blessed night by praying, reciting the Quran, and seeking Allah’s (SWT) forgiveness and mercy. We can use this opportunity to give in charity and help those in need. Allah loves those who give charity and help the poor and needy. Giving charity on Laylatul Qadr can increase our rewards and blessings.

Supplication for Laylatul Qadr

Although one can recommend several duas for Laylat al Qadr, the following comes from Hadith and is therefore highly recommended:

“Aishah narrated: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view? If I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me (Allāhumma innaka `Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu `annī).’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3513)

“اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعفُ عني”
