The Importance of the Month of Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth and most important month of the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, the Quran was revealed, and Muslims fast, pray, meditate, self-reflect, and give charity.
While fasting, Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to dusk (Maghrib), avoiding food, drinks, and all kinds of immoral activities. In addition to fasting and Salat, many Muslims observe the voluntary Tarawih prayers to understand the Quran and its teachings. Ramadan is of central importance in the Muslim world for many reasons. In this article, we will discuss why Ramadan is spiritually and historically important for Muslims. This article will help you mark important events in your Ramadan Calendar 2025 and prepare for this Holy Month.

What is the purpose of fasting?
The Quran clearly states that fasting leads to the attainment of taqwa.
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:183)
The word Taqwa means forbearance, fear of abstinence, or righteousness. Taqwa results in obeying Allah’s (SWT) commands and avoiding matters that may invite His disapproval. Taqwa urges believers to perform righteous deeds while staying mindful of their actions. The Quran tells us:
“But yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and fears Allah – then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.” (Surat ‘Āli `Imrān, 3:76)
Hadith About Ramadan’s Importance:
Several Hadiths also clarify the importance of Ramadan, which presents believers with an excellent opportunity to earn spiritual rewards.
The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: “There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.”‘ (Sunan an-Nasa’i, 2106)
There is another Hadith that emphasizes the importance of Ramadan.
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2008)
The Three Ashras of Ramadan:
Ramadan comes in three stages or Ashras. The first two Ashras consist of ten days each, while the last may have nine or ten days. The first Ashra of Ramadan signifies mercy, the second represents forgiveness, and the third Ashra promises safety from hellfire. While all three Ashra urge believers to devote themselves to Allah (SWT), the last Ashra is important due to Laylatul Qadr. You can set up your Ramadan Calendar 2025 to organize your spiritual and charitable goals in advance.

Laylatul Qadr:
Laylatul Qadr, or the night of decree, is one of the most important nights in the Islamic calendar. The Quran defines Laylatul Qadr in the following verses:
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Surat Al-Qadr, 97: 1-5)
The rewards of performing any acts of devotion on the night of Laylatul Qadr are greater than repeating that noble act for a thousand months. Moreover, Laylatul Qadr is considered the night of decree, in which important decisions regarding death, life, provisions, and other human matters are made. While we know Laylatul Qadr’s significance, no one can be sure when it occurs. Some Hadith indicate that the Laylatul Qadr falls on one of the odd-numbered nights of the last Ashra. Update your Ramadan Calendar 2025 so that you don’t miss out on the great spiritual offering of Laylatul Qadr.
According to a Hadith:
“Some men amongst the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) were shown in their dreams that the night of Qadr was in the last seven nights of Ramadan. Allah (SWT)’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “It seems that all your dreams agree that (the Night of Qadr) is in the last seven nights, and whoever wants to search for it (i.e. the Night of Qadr) should search in the last seven (nights of Ramadan)”[ Sahih al-Bukhari 2015, Book 32, Hadith 2]
However, most Muslims traditionally observe Laylatul Qadr on the 27th of Ramadan, making it one of the most important nights for believers.
Significant Historical Events That Occurred During Ramadan
Ramadan’s spiritual importance is known to all Muslims, but several historical events important to Muslim history took place during Ramdan. You can mark your Ramadan calendar 2025 to commemorate these events:
- The battle of Badr took place on the 17th of Ramadan.
- The conquest of Makkah happened during Ramadan.

Ramadan is observed throughout the Muslim world as one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar. The Quran and the Hadith establish the significance of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast and devote themselves to Allah (SWT). This month comes in three Ashras or stages. Each Ashra has its distinct significance. While all the Ashras of Ramadan are important for Muslims, the last Ashra is considered very special due to Laylatul Qadr, the night of the decree. Acts of devotion performed on Laylatul Qadr yield greater rewards than doing the same acts for a thousand months. This Month is a great opportunity for Muslims to please Allah (SWT), and we should start setting up our Ramadan Calendar 2025 to make an organized effort for our devotional and charitable goals.
