The Benefits of Giving Sadaqah in Ramadan
Islam’s concept of piety extends beyond an individual’s relationship with Allah (SWT). It also emphasizes the need to benefit fellow human beings. Haqooq Ul Ibaad are the duties we owe to humanity. These duties hold great importance in Islam as it is believed that Allah may forgive Haqooq Ul Allah (the duties to Allah), but any digression from Haqooq Ul Ibad will only be forgiven by the person whose rights were neglected. Haqooq Ul Ibad establishes fundamental guidelines for human behavior. In Islam, charity is not a mere obligation but an act of worship:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Every joint of a person must perform a charity each day that the sun rises: to judge justly between two people is a charity. To help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity. And the good word is a charity. And every step that you take towards the prayer is a charity, and removing a harmful object from the road is a charity.” ([Al-Bukhari] [Muslim] Hadith 26, 40 Hadith an-Nawawi)
In this article, we will understand why giving Sadaqah in Ramadan is a gateway to numerous blessings.
What is Sadaqah?
The word Sadaqah comes from Sidq, which means sincerity. It is a voluntary charity based on generosity, compassion, and love towards humanity. Sadaqah is not limited to financial assistance. Acts of virtue that benefit others, such as planting trees, constructing wells, establishing welfare organizations, and creating homes or shelters for those in need, can be considered Sadaqah. According to a Hadith:
“Every good is charity. Indeed among the good is to meet your brother with a smiling face, and to pour what is left in your bucket into the vessel of your brother.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1970)
Forms of Sadaqah
Sadaqah can take different forms. These might include the following:
Monetary donations: Financial help for orphans, widows, or deserving people in dire need of relief.
Gestures of Kindness: Speaking kindly, sharing advice, devoting time to family and friends, talking gently, helping someone carry their belongings, helping someone who is lost, or even smiling is considered Sadaqah.
Sadaqah Jariyah: Sadaqah Jariyah is an act of kindness with ongoing benefits. The rewards continue even after the person’s death. As long as the source of Sadaqah Jariya continues to benefit the subject (persons or animals), its rewards also keep adding up.

Sadaqah has numerous social and spiritual benefits. Some of those benefits are discussed below.
Protection from Calamities & Difficulties
Human lives are filled with difficulties and challenges. One way of dealing with difficult times is to help others in their difficulties. According to a Hadith, Sadaqa helps us avoid calamities:
‘Ali reported God’s messenger as saying, “Give the Sadaqa without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.”, (Mishkat al-Masabih 1887)
Benefits of Giving Sadaqah
Vanquishes Sins
As human beings, we are prone to make mistakes and commit sins. We should always hope for Allah’s (SWT) mercy and give Sadaqah to shield ourselves from sins. Here is a Hadith about Sadaqah:
“… and Sadaqah (charity) extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.'” (Jami`at-Tirmidhi 614)
Promotes Humbleness
Islam prescribes that we give Sadaqah discreetly. It must never become a source of self-aggrandizement. Instead, we are required to stay humble, grateful, and humane. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “A crafty one, a miser, and one who keeps reminding people of what he has given will not enter paradise.” (Mishkat al-Masabih 1873)
Source of Abundant Blessings
Sadaqah doesn’t reduce wealth. It only multiplies the rewards for this life and after.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, ‘O son of Adam! Spend, and I shall spend on you.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5352)
There is another Hadith that says: “Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status.” (Sahih Muslim 2588)
