Urwa Gained the Ability to Hear
Urwa Bibi's Story
Urwa, a 3-year-old girl from Larkana, had been unable to hear the sounds around her since birth. Urwa couldn’t explore the world like other kids of her age. She had never heard her parents’ soothing voices. Her parents learned about her condition when she was one year old. Concerned about her, they took her to a nearby hospital and consulted a doctor. After conducting some medical tests, the doctor diagnosed Urwa with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and recommended cochlear implant surgery. However, the cost of the surgery was beyond her family’s financial reach.
Urwa lived in a small mud house with her eight family members. Her father, the sole breadwinner in the family, worked as a daily wage laborer and earned just PKR 35000 per month. This monthly income was insufficient to cover even the basic necessities for Urwa, her five siblings, and their elderly parents. The significant cost of the surgery was overwhelming for Urwa’s family. Due to their financial constraints, they couldn’t afford to pay for the surgery. During this time of need, Urwa’s family reached out to Transparent Hands and asked us to register her case. After listening to their concerns, we swiftly registered her case.
On 27th July 2024, Urwa was admitted to the GIMS Hospital in Gambat. Her surgery took place on 28th July 2024. Dr. Maqbool Ahmed skillfully inserted the internal component of the cochlear implant. The surgery was successful and Urwa stayed in the hospital for just one day. After receiving post-operative care, Urwa was discharged in satisfactory condition on 29th July 2024.
Six weeks after the surgery, the external component of the cochlear implant was installed. To fully learn language and communication skills, Urwa now receives speech therapy sessions. Urwa’s parents shared their emotions as follows:
“We can’t believe Urwa can finally hear us. It’s a miracle made possible by your kindness. We’ll be forever grateful to you. You have changed our daughter’s life.”
Your compassion has opened up the world of sounds for Urwa, giving her a chance to enter a brighter future. Urwa and her family are incredibly grateful to you for your generosity.
