Reasons to Give Sadaqah and Zakat to Transparent Hands

Charity is one of the most important duties for Muslims. While Zakat is obligatory charity, Muslims are also encouraged to give Sadaqah, a voluntary form of charity in Islam. Both forms of charity offer many spiritual benefits. Besides spiritual rewards, charity can enrich our world and make it more equitable for everyone. The uneven distribution of wealth and poverty is one of the leading problems of our world. According to the UNDP, after 2020, nearly 71 million more people were driven into extreme poverty, and if current trends continue, about 574 million people will still be facing extreme poverty by 2030. According to the World Bank and WHO, nearly half the world lacks healthcare services. To address this alarming situation, all of us must work together to find solutions.

Transparent Hands is a leading online crowdfunding platform providing healthcare to Pakistan’s most deserving people. In this article, we will discuss the significance of giving to charity in Islam and why you should give Sadaqah and Zakat to Transparent Hands.

The Importance of Sadaqah in Islam

The Quran reveals the human tendency to accumulate wealth.

“And you love wealth with immense love.” (Surat Al-Fajr, 89:20)

The Quran also tells us:

“Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah ] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” (Surat ‘Āli `Imrān, 3: 92)

For believers, the real motivation is to strive for success in the afterlife. The following Hadith warns believers of the dangers of avarice.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) preached and said: “Abstain from avarice, for those who had been before you were annihilated due to avarice. It (avarice) commanded them to show niggardliness; it commanded them to cut off their relationship with their nearest relatives, so they cut off. It commanded them to show profligacy, so they showed it.”(Sunan Abi Dawud, 1698)

There is another Hadith that comments on the human propensity for accumulating wealth:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “If the son of Adam (the human being) had two valleys of money, he would wish for a third, for nothing can fill the belly of Adam’s son except dust, and Allah forgives him who repents to Him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6436)

Thus, Sadaqah is a non-obligatory type of charity and a highly encouraged practice in Islam. The Sadaqah comes from ‘Sidq’, which means sincerity of purpose. Sadaqah is given out of kindness of heart and is a non-obligatory form of charity in Islam. By giving Sadaqah, believers demonstrate their faith’s sincerity and commitment to Allah (SWT).

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Every good is charity. Indeed among the good is to meet your brother with a smiling face, and to pour what is left in your bucket into the vessel of your brother.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1970)

Sadaqah offers many spiritual benefits. According to the following Hadith, Sadaqah eases difficulties and calamities.

‘Ali reported God’s messenger as saying, “Give the Sadaqa without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.”, (Mishkat al-Masabih 1887)

Thus, Sadaqah also erases sins and allows the giver a better chance of redemption.

“Sadaqah (charity) extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” (Jami`at-Tirmidhi, 614)

Thus, believers are urged to abandon their inane love for money and power, and to spend for a more significant cause.

The Prophet () said, “Allah (SWT) said, ‘O son of Adam! Spend, and I shall spend on you.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5352)

The Importance of Giving Zakat in Islam

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and an obligatory form of almsgiving. All eligible Muslims must pay Zakat. The Quran and Hadith ordained believers to give Zakat.

The Quran tells us:

“And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:110)

Although Zakat has the power to purify our wealth, one must keep in mind that Islam strictly prohibits earning through illegal or haram sources. Zakat only purifies Halal and legal earnings.

The Quran tells us: “Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [ Allah ‘s blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.”  (Surat At-Tawbah, 9:103)

The Zakat amount incumbent on eligible Muslims is 2.5% of their wealth after deducting their liabilities. However, the total must exceed the Nisab value for qualification. Note that the official Nisab value announced for 2025 in Pakistan is PKR 179,689.

By giving Zakat, we ensure that the money doesn’t stagnate. According to a UNDP study, the global Zakat pool is between US$200 billion and US$1 trillion. This amount has the potential to create many opportunities for people who are bound by their economic circumstances.

Hence, by giving Zakat, we have a better chance of succeeding in the afterlife while contributing to the welfare of many lives around us.
