Umaima Atif Awaits Cochlear Implant Surgery
Umaima Atif's Story
Umaima Atif, a 2-year-old girl from Sheikhupura, has been living in a world of silence since birth. Her parents noticed her unresponsiveness to sounds and took her to a nearby doctor. After a thorough evaluation, the audiologist diagnosed her with Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL). It is a condition, in which damage occurs to the inner structure of the ear. The condition is also impacting her cognitive development. The doctor has recommended cochlear implant surgery to restore her hearing. The cochlear implant is a device that stimulates the cochlear nerve and enables a person to hear.
Umaima’s parents long to see their daughter hear the laughter of her loved ones and respond to voices. The cochlear implant will ultimately help her to get rid of the world of silence and isolation. The overall cost of the surgery looms heavily over Umaima’s parents. Living in the 2-marla rented brick house, they struggle to make ends meet. Her father, the only breadwinner in the entire family, brings in PKR 30,000 per month. With the house rent amounting to PKR 6000 and utility bills totaling PKR 3000, they can’t afford the expensive cost of a cochlear implant device.
In this time of distress, Umaima’s family contacted Transparent Hands.
Umaima’s parents said in despair:
“Every parent wishes to hear their child’s first words. We want Umaima to hear us and respond to the sounds around her. It’s our humble appeal to please help our only daughter to get this cochlear implant device.”
Due to their financial hardships, Umaima’s family cannot afford the cost of the surgery. Recognizing the need for the surgery, Transparent Hands has registered Umaima’s case and aims to help her by giving her the gift of hearing. Your contributions will transform her life and enable her to navigate her surroundings.
Let’s unite in our mission to support her to overcome this congenital deafness and enjoy the world of sounds.
Please Note: In certain situations, we proceed with the patient's surgery/medical procedure despite incomplete funding displayed on the website. Following the surgery/medical procedure, we persist in collecting funds and maintain the campaign on the website until funding is secured in full. Hospitals have granted us a grace period for bill payment.
Umaima Atif's Story
Umaima Atif, a 2-year-old innocent girl from Sheikhupura, was suffering from congenital deafness. Umaima had never heard the laughter of other children and her mother’s lullabies. She couldn’t enjoy the simple pleasures of life due to her inability to hear. Her parents noticed her hearing impairment when she was one year old. They took her to a nearby hospital and received a consultation from a doctor, who after performing a thorough examination diagnosed Umaima with congenital sensorineural hearing loss. The doctor advised cochlear implant surgery that would allow her to hear different sounds around her. Unfortunately, Umaima’s parents didn’t have enough money to pay for her surgery. They desperately wanted her to have this cochlear implant surgery so that she would never miss out on any opportunity to fully enjoy her life. Living in a small rented house, they were struggling to make ends meet. Umaima’s father is the sole provider for the family and his meager monthly income is not sufficient to even cover their house rent, utility bills, and other living expenses. During this challenging time, Umaima’s parents reached out to Transparent Hands and asked us for help. We promptly registered her case and the support of our donors enabled us to arrange surgery for Umaima. On 26-07-2024, Umaima was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. The surgery took place on 29-07-2025 and Dr. Maqbool Ahmed carefully managed her case and inserted the internal component of the cochlear implant. After receiving post-operative care and recovering, Umaima was discharged from the hospital on 28-07-2024. The external component of the cochlear implant was installed six weeks after the surgery. To achieve more milestones, Umaima is attending regular speech therapy sessions. Umaima Atif’s parents said in happiness: “It gave us immense pleasure when Umaima responded to our voices for the first time. You enabled our daughter to hear and speak. We can’t tell how happy we are. We are thankful for the support we received.” Umaima is on her way to discovering different sounds and is learning new words to improve her communication. Her parents are extremely grateful to you as your contribution allowed their daughter to enter the world of sounds.
