Naheed Asma, a 52-year-old resident of Sahiwal, has been suffering from pain and swelling in her legs for the last 13 years. Upon consultation, the doctor gave her anti-inflammatory medicines. However, the pain and swelling in her knee joints increased with time. Her husband took her to the local hospital. The doctor evaluated her, ran some diagnostic tests, and diagnosed her with Knee Osteoarthritis. It is the most common form of arthritis and is known as degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis. The doctor advised her to undergo left Total Knee Replacement Surgery. It is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap.
She lives in a small house with her husband and one child. Her husband is the sole earner in the family and makes just PKR 21,000 per month. He has no other source of income. Due to financial constraints, he is unable to afford the surgical expenses. She said in a depressed tone:
“I’m exhausted, anxious, and lonely. The pain is affecting almost every part of my life. I request you all to donate generously for my surgery.”
