Sami Ul Hassan, aged 3 years, lives in Chakwal. He was suffering from sensorineural hearing loss since his birth. His parents didn’t know that at first, but when he turned one year old, his parents got suspicious due to his unresponsiveness to their voices. They took him to the hospital and the doctors diagnosed him with SNHL. Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, is categorized by inner ear damage. The inner ear comprises a spiraling organ called the cochlea that contains tiny hair called stereocilia. These hairs convert vibrations from sound waves into neural signals that are carried to the brain via the auditory nerve. It is sadly the most common type of permanent hearing loss. Although medicine or surgery cannot fix this issue properly, a cochlear implant can help a great deal. A cochlear implant helps the patient to detect the sound and the direction of the sound as well. This progress enables them to acquaint themselves with the surrounding sounds.
A cochlear implant is an expensive surgical procedure that Sami Ul Hassan’s father cannot afford with his mere income of PKR. 10,000 and a family of 4 members to feed.
“At first we thought he was too small to understand. We got suspicious after one year when he was still unresponsive to our voice. I can feel my son’s loneliness while sitting with children his age and not hearing their voice. Just seeing them play and sitting between them clueless. It is heartbreaking.”
Luckily, now that Muhammad Sami Ul Hassan’s case is registered with Transparent Hands, we can make this surgery possible with your help. As Sami awaits Cochlear Implant Surgery, kindly generously so he can enjoy the beautiful sounds of the world.
