Rubab’s Struggle for a Chance at a Healthy Life
Rubab Zadi's Story
Six-year-old Rubab Zadi has battled breathing difficulties and chest pains for most of her young life. When her parents first noticed these troubling symptoms at just 1 year old, they knew something was wrong. After extensive medical testing, Rubab was diagnosed with atrial septal defect (ASD), a congenital heart condition where there is a hole between the upper chambers of the heart.
The doctor’s recommendation was clear: Rubab needed surgery to close the ASD and give her a chance at a healthy life. However, for Rubab’s family living in a modest mud home in a village near Jhang, affording this critical procedure was simply out of reach.
Rubab’s father, a daily wage laborer earning just 20,000 PKR per month, is the sole breadwinner supporting his wife and three other children. With utility bills and school fees taking a significant portion of the family’s meager income, there is little left over to cover Rubab’s surgical expenses.
“It pains me to see my daughter struggle to breathe and grow,” Rubab’s father shared, his voice heavy with emotion. “As her father, I want nothing more than to give her the treatment she needs, but the costs are beyond what I can afford. I lie awake at night worrying about her future. “My daughter deserves a chance to live a full and healthy life, just like other children. With your support, we can give her that opportunity.”
Time is of the essence for Rubab. Without the ASD closure surgery, her condition will only deteriorate, putting her young life at serious risk. Rubab Zadi's Story
Rubab Zadi, a 6-year-old girl from Jhang, had been suffering from breathlessness and chest discomfort since birth. This innocent girl struggled to catch her breath after simple activities and seemed unusually tired. Moreover, she was unable to gain weight like other kids of her age. Concerned about her condition, her parents took her to a doctor, who referred them to a specialist. After several tests, they received shocking news—Rubab had an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). To repair this defect, the doctor recommended open-heart surgery for ASD closure. However, Rubab’s family couldn’t afford the surgery. Rubab lives in a two-room mud house with a joint family of five members. Her father worked as a daily wage laborer, earning barely enough to meet the family’s basic needs. With rising expenses and the uncertainty of daily income, they couldn’t even dream of affording the life-saving surgery their daughter desperately needed. During this challenging time, Rubab’s family contacted Transparent Hands and asked us for help. After listening to their concerns, we promptly registered her case. On 1st July 2024, Rubab was admitted to the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital. The surgery took place on 2nd July 2024. Dr. Faiz Rasool performed the surgery, successfully closing the defect in Rubab’s heart. Rubab stayed in the hospital for four days and received post-operative care. After recovery, she was finally discharged in satisfactory condition on 5th July 2024. Her parents, overwhelmed with gratitude, couldn’t believe their daughter’s heart was saved. They described their emotions as follows: “It felt like a heavy burden was lifted from our hearts. We owe our daughter’s life to you. Her surgery wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!” Today, Rubab’s life has changed. She’s able to run, laugh, and play without gasping for breath or feeling fatigued. Her health has significantly improved, and she can now enjoy her childhood to the fullest. Rubab’s family extends their deepest gratitude to you and the Pakistan Children's Heart Foundation.
