Mahnoor Awaits Cochlear Implant Surgery

Mahnoor Fatima's Story

Four-year-old Mahnoor Fatima from Sahiwal has been struggling with congenital hearing loss. She lives with her parents and sister in a village near Sahiwal. When she was a year old, her parents found out about her hearing loss.

Mahnoor’s parents took her to a nearby local hospital, where the doctor recommended cochlear implant surgery. This surgery accompanied by speech therapy sessions would provide her access to a whole new universe of sounds and sensations.

Regretfully, Mahnoor’s family is facing a lot of financial difficulties. Her father earns PKR 15,000 a month as the only provider for the family. Their basic living expenditures, which include PKR 3,000 for utilities and PKR 5,000 for rent, are hardly met by this income.

The cost of cochlear implant operation is expected to cost over PKR 2 million, which is considerably above the family’s resources. Mahnoor’s father is disturbed by his inability to pay for the surgery his daughter needs.

Mahnoor’s father said in despair:

“The pain of seeing my beloved daughter suffer in silence and isolation from the world breaks my heart.”
