Seventy years old Rani Bibi hails from a remote area near Kasur. For the last two years, Rani Bibi’s vision started to decline. At first, she did not pay much attention to it. But, later, things began to change for the worse. Upon consultation and examination, the doctor diagnosed Rani Bibi with a cataract in her left eye. A cataract is a clouding of the clear lens that eventually interferes with vision. Some signs and symptoms of cataracts include dim, clouded or blurred vision, difficulty with vision during the night, increasing sensitivity of the eye to light and glare, seeing “halos” around lights, double vision in affected eyes.

To treat this condition, the doctor has advised Rani Bibi to undergo a Phacoemulsification with IOL surgery in which her lens will be emulsified and replaced with an artificial lens. 

Unfortunately, Rani Bibi cannot afford the hefty cost of the surgery. Rani Bibi and her husband run their household by taking care of the landlord’s cattle. Their son works as a daily wage labourer and hardly earns enough to sustain himself. In these circumstances, they are in no position to arrange for Rani’s surgery. She told us:

“I have started to hate nighttime because I cannot see anything at night. As if my life has been put at a halt by the darkness.”
