Noor Hassan's Story

Noor Hassan, a 68-year-old man from Mardan, has been suffering from right knee pain for many years. Simple activities like standing, walking around the home, and carrying out his routine tasks have become significantly challenging for him and he needs support to perform these activities. Concerned about his condition, he went to a nearby hospital to consult a doctor, who performed an X-ray and some lab tests. Noor was diagnosed with right knee osteoarthritis – a condition in which a cartilage lining the joint wears down, causing the bones to rub against each other. To restore his ability to walk, the doctor advised Total Knee Replacement Surgery. However, the cost of the surgery is beyond his financial reach.

Noor Hassan misses the time when he could walk without any support. Now his condition has made him dependent on others, affecting him emotionally and psychologically. If Noor doesn’t get the surgery soon, he may face permanent loss of movement at the knee joint. He might not be able to stand, sit, and walk.

Noor lives in a small mud house with his five family members. Noor’s knee condition stole his ability to provide for his family. His son is a daily wage laborer and brings in just PKR 20,000 per month. With this meager monthly income, they hardly manage to pay for utility bills of PKR 3000 and other living expenses. Moreover, they are burdened with a staggering loan of PKR 100,000. Noor’s family is surviving in extreme poverty and the significant cost of the surgery is simply out of their reach.
