Ziyam Khan's Story

Ziyam’s parents’ dreams are at risk of shattering into many pieces due to his congenital heart defects. Despite their best efforts and courageous fight, Ziyam struggles to breathe correctly and gains weight. He is a tiny warrior, fighting for his life every day. He can overcome this challenge and live the life he deserves, filled with laughter, joy, and endless potential. All he needs is one more chance, and that chance is a Senning repair procedure. This life-saving surgery will redirect blood flow to Ziyam’s heart and give him the chance to grow, play, and live without fear. One-and-a-half-year-old Ziyam, a resident of Mardan, has been suffering from dyspnea and cyanosis. He is unable to gain weight. His parents noticed these symptoms when he was just a month old. They took him to the local hospital. After running some diagnostic tests, the cardiologist diagnosed him with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and an interventricular septum (IVS). At the age of two months, the heart surgeon also performed a balloon atrial septostomy to restore blood flow to the heart. However, he started showing the same symptoms again. When he returned to the cardiologist, he was advised to undergo a Senning procedure to treat the transposition of the great arteries, which involves redirecting blood flow to the lungs for oxygenation.

He is living in a rented house with his parents and three siblings. His father is the family’s sole breadwinner and earns PKR 14,000 monthly as a shopkeeper. He is financially unable to manage the surgical expenses, and time is running out. He said in a depressed tone:

“ With a heavy heart, I struggle to find a way to save my child’s life. The thought of not being able to afford the necessary cardiac surgery tears me apart inside. Kindly donate to give him the gift of a healthy future.”

Meet Ziyam, a brave little boy who lives in Mardan. When he was only a month old, his parents noticed that he had trouble breathing and his skin had a bluish tint. They were worried and took him to the local hospital, where the doctor discovered that Ziyam had a heart problem called transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and an interventricular septum (IVS). It made it hard for his heart to work properly. Ziyam's parents didn't give up hope. When he was two months old, a heart surgeon performed a special procedure called a balloon atrial septostomy to help improve the blood flow to his heart. It provided some relief, but unfortunately, the symptoms returned. The doctor then suggested another procedure called a Senning procedure, which could fix the problem with Ziyam's heart. However, Ziyam's father couldn't afford the cost of the surgery, and it was a difficult time for their family. That's when they reached out to Transparent Hands, an organization that helps families in need of medical assistance. They registered Ziyam's case and asked for help. Finally, on the 27th of February 2023, Ziyam was admitted to Ittefaq Hospital in Lahore, where the talented Dr. Asim performed the Senning procedure. The surgery was a success, and after staying in the hospital for seven days, Ziyam was allowed to go home. Ziyam's story is a shining example of how people coming together can change a life.
