Suriya Begum's Story
Suriya Begum, a 39-year-old widow from Depalpur, Okara, has been experiencing a painful and growing lump on the front of her neck for many years. The swelling has increased in size, making it difficult for her to perform daily tasks. Along with persistent pain, she also experiences difficulty in swallowing and breathing. Worried about her health, she finally visited a doctor. After medical evaluation and diagnostic tests, she was diagnosed with Multinodular Goiter—a condition where multiple lumps develop in the thyroid gland, causing swelling and discomfort in neck. The doctor has advised her to undergo a subtotal thyroidectomy, a surgery to remove part of the thyroid gland. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is beyond her reach.
Suriya’s illness can be life-threatening. If left untreated, it may obstruct her airway, cause difficulty in breathing and swallowing, and may lead to cancer.
Suriya is the sole provider for her three children, who are entirely dependent on her. After the tragic loss of her husband, she took on the responsibility of raising them alone. She works as a housemaid and earns only PKR 18,000 per month, struggling to meet even the most basic needs of her family. Out of this limited income, she pays PKR 2500 for utility bills and barely manages the house rent as well as food expenses. With no extra savings and no one to turn to for financial help, affording this surgery is impossible for her.
Suriya expressed her heartfelt plea as follows:
“I have been bearing this pain for so long, but now it is getting worse. I am worried about my children. If something happens to me, who will take care of them? I want to live a healthy life for my children, but I cannot afford this surgery. Please help me.”
