Nawabzadi Ahmed's Story

Nawabzadi Ahmed, a 49-year-old woman from Hyderabad, has been suffering from pain in the umbilical region for the past two years. Simple activities like sitting and standing for a prolonged time have become increasingly difficult for her. Due to her illness, she can’t manage her household tasks. Recently, she noticed that the lump in her umbilical region had grown larger, causing her even more distress. She visited a doctor at a nearby hospital. After a thorough examination, the doctor diagnosed her with Paraumbilical Hernia (PUH). It is a protrusion of tissue through a defect in the abdominal wall. The doctor advised hernia surgery with mesh repair, but the cost of the procedure is far beyond what her family can afford.

Without the surgery, her condition would continue to worsen. It may lead to serious complications such as a strangulated hernia, where the blood supply to the intestine is cut off. This may cause severe pain, infection, and potentially life-threatening damage to her intestines, requiring emergency surgery.

Nawabzadi’s husband works as a laborer, earning a meager income of PKR 25,000 per month. With five children to feed and daily expenses to manage, they barely make it through each month. Every penny is spent on basic necessities. Due to their financial constraints, affording Nawabzadi’s surgery is simply impossible for them. They have no savings and no one to turn to for financial assistance.

With teary eyes, Nawabzadi shared her plea as follows:

“I have been experiencing this pain for so long, hoping that one day I would get better. But now, I fear that without surgery, my condition will only get worse. My husband works hard, but we cannot afford the treatment. I just want to be healthy again so I can take care of my family. Please help me.”
