Fizza Habib's Story

Fizza Habib, aged 1.5 years, a resident of Nankana Sahib is diagnosed to have been suffering from Anorectal malformation (ARM) categorized by recto-vestibular fistula (RVF). A congenital recto-vaginal fistula is a type of ARM characterized by the abnormal connection of the rectum to the vagina. This results in the passage of gas or feces through the vagina as it leaks through the fistulous communication. The doctors had advised her to undergo Sigmoid Loop Colostomy which is the first stage of her treatment for (RVF). Unfortunately due to financial constraints Fizza Habib awaits Sigmoid Loop Colostomy as her family has struggled with securing a date for operation at the government hospital, and is unable to get her operated in a private hospital. Noor Fatima’s mother shares their agony as follows:

“My daughter was born with this condition. I was devastated. Due to COVID and financial constraints her treatment kept on being delayed. My husband works as a tailor, he earns PKR.15,000 per month. The money he makes is not enough to help my daughter. From his salary we have to pay the rent of our house, run the house, and provide for five family members. In these circumstances, her surgery is out of our reach.”

Fizza Habib's Story

Fizza Habib, aged 1.5 years, was born with an unusual defect. Her fecal passage was also through the vaginal orifice. Concerned, when her parents took her to the doctor, she was diagnosed with an anorectal malformation called rectovestibular fistula (ARM- RVF). The surgeon advised a series of surgeries to correct her condition including sigmoid colostomy, repair of fistula and finally colostomy reversal. For this purpose, Fizza was admitted to Akram Medical Complex and her sigmoid loop colostomy (stage 1 surgery) was performed by Dr. M. Bilal Mirza on 16.06.2021. She stayed in the hospital for two days and was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Fizza had a swift recovery post-surgery.
