Jawad Ahmad's Story
Jawad Ahmad, a 23-year-old man from Mardan, has been suffering from bilateral knee pain for the past ten years. His condition is accompanied by contractures, affecting his ability to walk and perform daily tasks. Moreover, Jawad’s illness has taken away his ability to work and provide for his family. He went to a local hospital and consulted a doctor. After a thorough evaluation, the doctor diagnosed him with bilateral osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative joint disease, characterized by the breakdown of cartilage and underlying bone. To enable him to walk independently, the doctor recommended left Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery, as his left knee joint is more symptomatic than the right one. Unfortunately, the surgical cost is out of his financial capacity.
If Jawad does not undergo surgery soon, he may experience persistent pain, and become unable to stand, sit, and walk. The condition may worsen over time, leading to joint deformity and further cartilage damage.
Jawad lives in a rented house with his extended family of nine members. His father is a farmer, and his brother is a daily wage laborer. Together, they earn just PKR 50,000 per month. This income is insufficient to cover their utility bills of PKR 5000, house rent of PKR 3000 as well as other living expenses. For ten years, Jawad’s life has been filled with challenges. He previously had a hip issue, for which his first right Total Hip Replacement (THR) was performed in 2022, and the second THR was done in June 2024 through Transparent Hands. Now, he needs surgery for his left knee joint, but he faces financial hardships and can’t pay for his life-changing surgery.
Jawad said with tear-filled eyes:
“For a long time, I have been bearing this pain and I am feeling helpless now. I am young but unable to do anything on my own. I miss walking without pain. This surgery can bring back my mobility but I have no means to pay for it. Please help me undergo the surgery.”
