Marwa Zahid's Story

Marwa Zahid, a 2-year-old little girl from Sialkot, has been living in a silent world since birth. Marwa smiles and plays like any other child, but she has never heard her mother’s soothing voice, the laughter of kids, and the sounds of nature around her. Her parents consulted a doctor about her hearing impairment, who ran some tests and diagnosed her with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). To enable her to hear sounds, the doctor recommended cochlear implant surgery. Unfortunately, Marwa’s family cannot afford the high cost of the surgery.

If Marwa doesn’t get the cochlear implant surgery soon, the consequences will be severe. She will continue to live in silence, unable to develop the ability to hear and speak. Marwa usually becomes frustrated when she cannot understand or be understood by those around her. Her inability to hear is affecting her development and will continue to impact her future.

Marwa’s father has passed away, and her uncle financially supports the family. Marwa’s mother works as a seamstress and earns just PKR 10,000 monthly. She lives in a two-room brick house with her six family members and survives in extreme poverty. With utility bills adding up to PKR 2000, and a staggering loan of PKR 300,000, the family’s financial situation is stretched thin. They have no room left for savings to pay for the costly surgery.
