Meet Naseem Akhtar, a 49-year-old woman from Karachi, who has been suffering from upper right abdominal pain for seven months. This persistent discomfort accompanied by nausea and digestive issues, has confined her to her home more often than she would like. After tolerating this suffering for far too long, Naseem consulted a doctor. The doctor ran a series of diagnostic tests including an ultrasound scan, and diagnosed her with Cholelithiasis. These are hard mineral deposits in the gallbladder and the source of her ongoing distress. To address her condition, her doctor recommended a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However, the cost of the surgery is overwhelming for her family.

As a devoted mother of three, Naseem finds it heartbreaking that her condition limits her ability to care for her family and engage in daily activities. If Naseem doesn’t get the surgery soon, her health may continue to deteriorate due to poor dietary intake. Moreover, continued intake of medicines may disturb her stomach.

Naseem lives in a small rented house with her husband and three children. Her husband, the sole breadwinner in the family, is a daily wage laborer and makes just PKR 30,000 per month. The family is surviving in poverty and they barely pay house rent of PKR 5000, and utility bills amounting to PKR 6000. They are also burdened with a loan of PKR 400,000. Naseem hopes for better but she is also scared about the consequences if she doesn’t undergo the surgery. Hope arose in Naseem’s life when a neighbor told her about Transparent Hands.
