We weren’t exactly living comfortably before but we still had food to eat, I was healthy, my children were attending school. Then, my accident happened and I could barely walk so I lost my job. The entire city went under lockdown and my husband lost his job. We went from being poor to having no money at all. Getting better for me is not a luxury, it is a necessity. 50-year-old Ruqiya Bibi met with an accident around 6 months ago and injured her spine. Afterward, she sought treatment from local clinics that worked for a little while. For the last month, however, Ruqiya has been experiencing intense backache to the point that she can barely put weight on her legs. When examined by a doctor, she was suggested urgent orthopedic surgery- spinal disc decompression and pedicle screw fixation.

Before the pain became severe, Ruqiya worked in different houses as a maid. She recently had to leave her job because her condition worsened. Her husband is a laborer who, during the best of times, hardly earned 600 to 700 PKR daily. Now, due to the coronavirus lockdown, he has been out of work too. This couple has rent to pay, 6 children to support, and currently, no earning hand.

Ruqiya Khatoon 's Story

Ruqiya Khatoon, 41 years old, came with a history of compression fracture of her D12 vertebra. She was diagnosed to have cord compression due to the fracture. She was advised surgery to correct this. Her surgery was done in Patel Hospital, on 10-05-20, by Dr. Zeeshan Mughal. Her decompression and 4 level pedicle screw fixation was done. She stayed for 4 days in the hospital and was discharged in good health.
