Muhammad Yaqoob's Story
Muhammad Yaqoob, aged 71 years, has been experiencing chest pain on and off for the past 3 months. He took pain medication for it but it only temporarily subsided. One day, around 2 months ago, he underwent a typical acute episode of angina and was rushed to the hospital. His ECG report showed that his heart condition is worse than he realized. The doctors told him that he had just experienced a heart attack and needed to undergo angiography as soon as possible. He might also require open heart surgery but that would be confirmed after the results of the angiography.
Muhammad Yaqoob has no resources to have his angiography conducted. He cannot work due to old age and his heart condition. He has 6 sons and 6 daughters. Three of his sons live separately in another village. His other three sons that live with him are completely unemployed. Only very occasionally, one of them gets a little bit of paid work which just about covers the household expenses of this family, including rent.
“None of my boys have had much luck finding jobs. They are good, hardworking men but these days, you get nowhere without a reference. They wait around to be handed menial jobs and we all live off what we can get. It is a difficult world for me and my family. Some days, we worry about food, other days we even worry about the roof over our heads. And now to top it all off, we have to worry about medical bills. These hospitals overcharge a poor person for the smallest of things. We cannot manage my treatment without help.” – Muhammad Yaqoob
