Asma Zafir's Story

Asma Zafir, age 31, is currently in her 31^st week of pregnancy. Asma has a very complicated history of pregnancies due to which, normal delivery is not an option. Her baby needs to be delivered through a C-section.

“After my divorce, a difficult phase in my life started. Allah’s protection allowed me to stay strong in this hard time. I eventually found someone who cared about me, so I remarried. We wanted a family of our own. Unfortunately, due to life threatening complications, I had to get 4 abortions. I was not prepared for this and each one left a scar on me. That is a very difficult thing for a woman to go through. When I finally got through the first four months of this pregnancy, my husband and I started becoming hopeful that we would be blessed with a child. I am now in the 7^th month and it feels like this baby is already a member of the family. I do not want my poor financial condition to take this baby away from me. I would not be able to stand that loss.”- Asma 

When Asma and her husband came to know that the delivery would be via C-section, the couple contacted local hospitals to get a free procedure. They weren’t given an appointment. The price demanded by private hospitals is not within their means. Asma cannot work right now and her husband, who works as a security guard, earns 15,000 PKR a month, of which 5000 is spent on renting the small space they live in and the rest, on household expenses.
