Mai Amna's Story

“‘Mama are you ok?’ ‘Mama, are you feeling sick again?’ These are just a few of the questions which Mai Amna’s children ask her every day. They try best to figure out how to provide comfort to their mother. But unfortunately, they are unable to do anything unless they arrange money for her treatment.”

Mai Amna, 50 years old mother of 8, has been suffering from cysts in her liver for five years. These painful cysts can attack her other organs in the body anytime if not treated in time. She suffers from heaviness, sudden pain when she tries to breathe and frequent fevers. Her stomach hurts all the time, but she does not have enough money to be treated.

She lives in a mud house with her two sons and a daughter; and although her husband is too old to work for long hours, he goes out to earn whatever little he can for his family. Her eldest children are married and cannot afford her treatment on top of their own expenses. The family earns only 12,000 per month in total.

When Mai Amna felt sick, she went to nearby areas but there were no local hospitals from where she could get the treatment. She could not afford the treatment from private hospitals. All hospitals she went to in other cities; gave her expenses which she could not even think to afford. This continued for a few years and after being refused many times, she tried to bear the pain and hoped that her condition would get better by itself. But it only got worse with the passage of time.
