Usman Ali's Story

A 10-year-old boy went to get his eye treated and came back with the diagnosis of heart disease. Difficult to imagine, isn’t it? Well, Usman Ali and his family are going through this worrisome time since their beloved child is suffering from patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). His father earns a little amount by working as a labourer and it hardly meets the household requirements. When they found out about Usman’s condition, they took him to the hospital for treatment but kept receiving disheartening responses for around 3 years. With time, his condition is getting worse and he has recently been complaining of having difficulty in breathing.

The surgery which is required by Usman is a simple PDA ligation. In simpler terms, the opening is closed. It requires the access to the site of opening through arteries followed by closing the hole using a device. This procedure has a high success rate. Usman’s father says:

“We did not understand at first what was happening, we only visited the hospital to get his eyes checked, but the news we received was heart-breaking. Doctors say that Usman has been born with some kind of openings in his heart or blood vessels. I don’t know. I just know that I want my son to be okay, he has recently been having trouble breathing properly and I feel so helpless watching him struggle. These doctors say that he can be treated, so we are praying that they can relieve our baby from this pain.”

Usman Ali's Story

Usman Ali, aged 10 years, a resident of Sialkot, was suffering from recurrent chest infections since birth. Upon medical evaluation he was diagnosed to have been suffering from Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). He was advised by his cardiologist to undergo PDA ligation. For this purpose, he was admitted to The University Of Lahore Teaching Hospital, where Dr. Salman Ahmad Shah performed PDA ligation on 15.03.2021. After four days of hospital stay Usman Ali was discharged in a satisfactory condition. The surgery was conducted with the support of Pakistan Children Heart foundation and other donors. A child who has had PDA ligation, requires lifelong care, an optimized lifestyle and examinations by a cardiologist. Luckily now Usman Ali is beyond the initial stage of treatment and is looking forward to cherishing life to its fullest.
