Muhammad Arqam's Story

Muhammad Arqam is a nine years old little boy from district Khanewal. At the age of two, Arqam  developed inguinal hernia on the right side, a condition that caused the poor little boy a lot of pain at such a little age. While the concept of common hernia is clear to most people, an inguinal hernia can be a tricky concept to understand. In simpler words, an inguinal hernia can occur when tissue protrudes through a weak spot in abdominal muscles into an area called the inguinal canal. As a result, a bulge is formed, which can cause immense discomfort and pain during daily life activities and chores.

There is one treatment that can bring things back on track for Muhammad Arqam. The procedure is called inguinal herniotomy. This procedure involves pushing back the hernia contents to their original abode in the body once the hernia sac is identified.  An effective surgical procedure but one that Arqam’s family cannot afford. You see, Arqam’s father is a laborer in a local textile mill. For all the hard work which his father puts in, he gets paid only 13,000 PKR per month. Affording a herniotomy procedure, at this point, is out of question for their family.
