Hafiza Rukhsana Bibi's Story

Hafiza Rukhsana Bibi, 28 years old & a resident of the district Khanewal, is currently pregnant with her third baby. She is a proud mother of two adorable children, a boy, and a girl. Rukhsana’s previous two pregnancies ended with an LSCS, and the situation is no different this time either. To avert the threat that complications pose, Rukhsana Bibi has been advised a C-section this time as well. In this surgical procedure, an incision is made to minimize blood loss during birthing. A cut is made a little above the urinary bladder’s connection with the uterus. The location of this incision is the lower segment, hence the process is called lower segmentation C-section. The biggest benefit associated with this type of C-section is the quick recovery of the maternal tissues.

Things sound OK leading up to this point, but not past it. You see, Rukhsana Bibi’s family is going through a period of financial turmoil. Multiple but low paying rural income streams that her husband has set up don’t amount to a substantial figure, sometimes even less than 12,000 PKR per month! With no assets in their possession or any support on offer from the relatives, Rukhsana Bibi is intimidated by the thought of an uncertain future. She says:

“I tried my luck with several institutes, checked on my relatives, but with very little success. To be honest, I feared this because of how things have been post-pandemic. But this reality check does nothing to dispel the fear that grips me every night, as I try my best to not think about a situation in the near future in which I don’t have enough funds for my C-section”
