Amina Shehzadi, aged 15, a resident of Sheikhupura is diagnosed to have been suffering from Anorectal malformation (ARM) categorized by recto-vestibular fistula (RVF). A congenital recto-vaginal fistula is a type of ARM characterized by the abnormal connection of the rectum to the vagina. This results in the passage of gas or faeces through the vagina as it leaks through the fistulous communication. Consequently, the doctors advised Amina Shehzadi to undergo a diversion colostomy. Transparent Hands arranged for her colostomy surgery. Now, the doctor has advised Amina to undergo an ASARP as the next step of the process. Anterior Sagittal Anorectoplasty (ASARP) is a surgery to make her back passage at the usual site. 

Unfortunately, Amina’s family cannot afford the hefty cost of this surgery. Amina’s father is out of work. Her brother and sister work for the family and hardly manage to earn 30,000 per month. In this measly income, despite efforts, it has become impossible for them to save up for their sister’s surgery. Amina’s sister told us:

“Now, it has been fifteen years since Amina has been suffering from this condition. It breaks my heart to see her going through this tormenting disorder. She asks me so many questions, sometimes I try to console her. Many times I have nothing to offer except for silence and tears.”
