Five-year-old Azlan, a resident of Sukkur, has been suffering from congenital sensorineural hearing loss. His parents realized he was not responding to their voices when he was a year old and were concerned. His parents took him to the local hospital, where his tests were done. Upon consultation, he was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss. The doctor advised him to undergo cochlear implant surgery. A cochlear implant is a small electronic device used to electrically stimulate the cochlear nerve (hearing nerve). The implant has external and internal parts. The external portion is attached behind the ear. It processes the sounds using a microphone before transmitting them to the implant’s internal component.

He lives in a rented house with his parents and four siblings. His father is the only breadwinner in the family and earns PKR 15,000 per month. His father’s financial position won’t allow him to pay for the surgical expenses. He said it in a despairing tone.

“The treatment necessary for our son to regain his hearing is extremely costly. We want our son to listen to our voices and play like every other child his age. However, this hearing defect is causing him a lot of stress. Please help us.”

His parents, deeply concerned about their son's well-being, sought medical assistance when he was just a year old. After being diagnosed with hearing loss, they were informed that cochlear implant surgery was necessary for Azlan to regain his hearing abilities.

However, the financial constraints of the family cast a shadow of despair over their hopes for their son's future. With a monthly income of only PKR 15,000, Azlan's father knew he couldn't afford the costly surgical expenses. We raised funds and made arrangements for his treatment, and Azlan was admitted to Ali Medical Center, where Dr. Jawad Ahmed performed the cochlear implant surgery successfully on 28-4-2023.
