Kaffarah

Give Kaffarah with Transparent Hands

Kaffarah is compensation for intentionally breaking a fast during Ramadan without a valid reason. It is a serious sin, and one must pay Kaffarah for it. Kaffarah reduces the burden of sin and allows the believer to seek forgiveness. As a Kaffarah, one must fast for 60 consecutive days (without a break) or feed 60 eligible people. If a person doesn't have the physical capacity to fast for 60 consecutive days, they can donate the amount required to feed 60 eligible people. The eligibility for (receiving) Kaffarah is the same as Zakat.

How is Kaffarah Different From Fidya?

Kaffarah is a penance that must be paid for deliberately breaking a fast without any valid reason, while Fidya is paid by individuals having a health condition from which recovery isn’t probable in the foreseeable future. Fidya doesn't require Qada, while Kaffarah has to be given with the Qada. Qada is fasting again to compensate for the invalidated fast.

FAQs

Kaffarah is the penance that needs to be paid when an individual intentionally invalidates a fast in Ramadan without any valid reason.

The word Kaffarah is derived from kafr, which means to cover.

The types of Kaffarah depend on the type of offense one might have committed. For instance, breaking an oath, intentionally breaking a fast, prohibited acts in Ehraam, accidental killings, and missing mandatory rituals during Hajj, are some situations that necessitate Kaffarah.

Kaffarah becomes an obligation when someone deliberately breaks a fast without a valid reason. The person will also pay Qada for the invalidated fast after Ramadan. By the same token, if the person chooses to pay penance by consecutively fasting for 60 days, it will be exercised right after Ramadan. However, if the person chooses to pay penance by feeding deserving people, they shouldn't wait till the end of Ramadan.

Kaffarah is required for individuals who intentionally break their fast during Ramadan. It does not apply to those who break their fast due to forgetfulness, illness, or other legitimate reasons.

Kaffarah only applies to breaking a fast intentionally during Ramadan.

There are two ways to fulfill Kaffarah:
1. Fast consecutively for 60 days without missing a single day.
2. Feed 60 deserving Muslims two meals each day or provide money equivalent to Sadaqat-e- Fitr for 60 recipients.

One must make up for the missed fast as Qada, along with paying the Kaffarah for the missed fast.

You can choose to feed 60 eligible Muslims instead of fasting consecutively for 60 days.

Yes, one should always believe in the infinite mercy and kindness of Allah (SWT). Breaking a fast during Ramdan is a grievous sin. One must repent for it and pay the Kaffarah and firmly believe in Allah’s (SWT) kindness.

The amount of Kaffarah needed for one fast is around PKR 30,000.

The eligibility for receiving Kaffarah is the same as Zakat. It should be given to Muslims who fall into either of the following categories: Fuqara, Masakeen, Zakat Collectors, newly converted Muslims, People in debt, people in imprisonment, people fighting for Allah's (SWT) cause, and travelers.

If you choose to donate the Kaffarah amount, you must donate an amount equivalent to feeding 60 deserving people. The amount needed to feed each person is half a Saa’, which is 1.75 kg of wheat or an equivalent monetary value.

Yes, the following Hadith sets the Kaffarah rules for breaking a fast intentionally before the designated time.
“While we were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) a man came and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have been ruined." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet (ﷺ) smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1936)
