Giving Tuesday: The concept
The Black Friday sales are a great spectacle every year, right? People punch people to get something off at an amazing discount, a scene that has become popularly associated with the concept of Thanksgiving. Is it, not a sad reality that our holidays have become nothing but an event where everyone tries to win at consumerism? Commercializing has been infused in our religious and cultural events, so much so that the essential spirit of these events has been nullified by a great extent. Thanksgiving sales & squabbles are a perfect example of that. It was about time that someone took a step towards the revival of the fast-diminishing spirit of generosity in society. Giving Tuesday is one such attempt at making people fall in love with the idea of giving, once more!
What does history tell us?
The Giving Tuesday hashtags that you will see in November have a little history behind them. We know some of you are yawning already, we promise we will be brief and certainly not bore you to death. Now, the first time this generosity movement surfaced was almost a decade ago i.e. in 2011. The official founding fathers of this day are 92nd Street Y & United Nations Foundation. This joint initiative was devised as a response to the growing wave of consumerism that threatened to engulf the spirit of giving which is almost like oxygen for the underprivileged section of any society. It was decided that the day would be celebrated five days after the Thanksgiving holiday to kick start what the founders dubbed as the giving season.
Impact of Giving Tuesday
We are not in a position to cite the exact amount of money donated on every Giving Tuesday since inception, it is just like requesting a precise figure for Christmas donations worldwide every year. However, what we can tell you is that the event has been a huge success. Just to quote one figure, it is estimated that the total amount collected on Giving Tuesday 2023 amounted to as much as $2.47 billion[i], and that is only in the US! We will discuss this topic in a bit, but have you grasped the significance of the event yet? It is exactly the sort of event that instils empathy and sympathy in the hearts of consumerists. Empathy and sympathy for those who cannot afford even a single meal per day!
Giving Tuesday 2023
It is not as if our battle with the novel coronavirus is over yet. The third wave that is hitting many countries now necessitates that we double our standards of generosity this year. There are millions out there who still need our help, and there couldn’t be a better opportunity of helping those in distress than Giving Tuesday. Please note that this year, Giving Tuesday will be celebrated on 30th November. So mark your calendars and get ready to celebrate this amazing event of generosity in its truest spirit!
How can you celebrate Giving Tuesday?
There isn’t one single way of celebrating Giving Tuesday. Of course, the central theme of the event is the revival of generosity. But that doesn’t mean that giving money is the only way you can be a part of a Giving Tuesday. No, there is much more to it! You can organize a fundraiser event with the help of your friends & family, conduct a seminar on the importance of the event itself or even play your part by promoting the day on social media actively. Can’t give money? No problem, just head to the nearest hospital and donate blood. Or maybe visit a center for the homeless and spend a day with them? It is all about giving love and affection to those who have been deprived of it for so long!

Final Thoughts
Folks that would be all from this discussion. We wish we could emphasize and stress the importance of individual participation on a Giving Tuesday, a bit more. Unfortunately, we have run out of space & time, and today’s no Giving Tuesday either which would lend us some more! Nevertheless, we are optimistic that you are thrilled by the concept of Giving Tuesday, and that you are already searching for the causes you would like to donate to. On that optimistic note, we bid you farewell from this space!
